The Boston Red Sox are getting a double-barreled boost for their playoff hopes over the final month of the season with the addition of outfielder Roman Anthony and shortstop Trevor Story from the injured list.
The moves come just before the final game of their series on Sunday against their division rivals, the New York Yankees.
Anthony will bat leadoff as the designated hitter and Story will hit eighth and play shortstop in the Aug. 30 game at Yankee Stadium. New York has won two of the first three games in the series.
The Yanks currently have a three-game edge on the Red Sox for the top wild-card spot in the American League.

Anthony, 22, has been out of action since May 4 with finger and wrist injuries. He’s had several setbacks during his recovery, but he’s back on the active roster and will play most every day at either DH or in left field.
Anthony slashed .280/.367/.600 with two doubles, two homers and seven RBIs on his rehab assignment at Class AAA Worcester.
Roman Anthony made his MLB debut with the Red Sox in 2025, hitting .292 with eight home runs and 32 RBIs in 71 games. In 30 games before his injury this season, he was hitting .229 with one homer and five RBIs.
Story, 33, went on the injured list on May 14 and underwent sports hermia surgery. He was off to a slow start this season, but did hit 25 home runs and steal 31 bases in 2025.
“I think it’s really important for us to get those guys back. We need them,” Red Sox first baseman Willson Contreras told MLB.com. “It’s also important to recognize the job or the work that the whole lineup has been putting in for the last three months.”
To make room on the active roster, the Red Sox optioned infielder Anthony Seigler and catcher Mickey Gasper to Worcester.
