A rough start last night to the Phillies’ 9-game West Coast road trip. Cal Raleigh awoke from his season-long slumber last night slugging three home runs to lead Seattle (63-69) to a 9-2 win over Philadelphia (73-59) and snapping the Phillies 9-game winning streak in the opener of their three-game series. With the win, the Mariners kept pace with the Rangers and remained within three games of the AL West leader. Philly dropped a half game further back in the NL East as a result of the loss and now trails the Braves by 3.5 games. They sit in the second Wild Card spot.
The Phillies actually struck first last night. Kyle Schwarber worked a leadoff walk, Bryce Harper and Luis Arraez followed with singles, and Alec Bohm‘s RBI groundout gave Philadelphia an early 1-0 lead in the top of the first. Seattle responded immediately against Phillies’ ace Zack Wheeler. Randy Arozarena walked, Dominic Canzone singled, and Julio Rodríguez crushed a three-run homer to left field. Two batters later, Raleigh added a two-run blast, turning a 1-0 deficit into a 5-1 Mariners lead before Wheeler could escape the inning.
J.T. Realmuto slowed the onslaught with a solo homer in the second, cutting the deficit to 5-2. But Seattle got back to work in the third. Rodríguez scored on a bases-loaded wild pitch in the third, then Raleigh and rookie infielder Cole Young hit back-to-back home runs in the fifth inning. Raleigh completed his historic night with another solo shot in the seventh.
Raleigh finished 3-for-3 with three homers, four RBIs, three runs scored and a walk, while Rodríguez added a three-run homer and two runs scored. Logan Gilbert earned the victory, allowing just two runs over five innings. Wheeler suffered one of his roughest outings of the season, surrendering eight runs on nine hits and five walks in four-plus innings. After scoring 48 runs during their nine-game winning streak, the Phillies were held to just five hits.
Philadelphia hands the ball tonight to veteran right-hander Aaron Nola (5-9, 5.12 ERA). After an unreliable start to the season, Nola owns a 2.51 ERA over his last five starts and has recorded quality starts in two of those outings. While neither number is attractive, Nola’s road numbers have been noticeably better than his results at home this season, posting a 4.54 ERA away from Citizens Bank Park compared to 5.72 at home.
Seattle counters with right-hander George Kirby (8-10, 4.18 ERA), whose season has been something of a tale of two venues. While his overall numbers sit at a respectable 4.18 ERA, he’s been significantly better at T-Mobile Park, where he owns a 3.40 ERA. On the road, that figure jumps above five. Kirby’s last two outings – both on the road – have been miserable. Over eight innings, the righthander has allowed 11 runs on 17 hits.
