After promoting Golden Boy’s August 1 card in Las Vegas, headlined by William Zepeda defending his WBC lightweight title against Lamont Roach, De La Hoya turned his attention to an even bigger target.

“Working on Vergil Ortiz versus Boots. Vergil Ortiz wants to fight. Let’s make that happen. It all depends on Boots.”

Ortiz has repeatedly said he wants to face the best fighters at 154 pounds, while Ennis recently moved up after his successful run at welterweight. A fight between the unbeaten contenders would immediately rank among the biggest in the division if both sides can reach an agreement.

De La Hoya then provided an update on Ryan Garcia.

“Working on Ryan Garcia versus Benn. I just got the memo today. So, that’s the fight that everybody wants to see. So, I’m gonna make it happen for you guys.”

Garcia has been linked to Conor Benn for months, although the fight has yet to be officially announced. The matchup has divided fans, with some preferring to see Garcia face one of the leading welterweight contenders instead.

De La Hoya also highlighted Golden Boy’s remaining plans for the summer.

“Also, Kid Austin versus Badi fighting for the full world title because Gervonta Davis is on recess, champion on recess. And also, Oscar Collazo versus Ricardo Sandoval. Oscar moving two weight classes to fight for Ricardo’s belts that he owns. Let’s go. The summer is looking great.”

The reference to Floyd Schofield Jr. (“Kid Austin”) facing Andy Hiraoka Badi was a nod to the WBA’s decision to place Gervonta Davis in champion-in-recess status, opening the door for the full lightweight title to be contested.

Golden Boy’s August 1 card already features Zepeda-Roach, Raymond Muratalla, Raul Curiel and other prospects. If De La Hoya can also finalize Ortiz-Ennis and Garcia-Benn, the promotional company could have one of its busiest stretches of the year.
