Needless Newcastle
Newcastle were the creators of their own downfall.
In the dying embers of the game Pope has a chance to just collect the ball and waste time – fall to the ground.
Instead he tries to play in Elanga but gets it wrong and Arsenal win a corner from that.
That resulting corner of course delivers their winning goal.
The game management has to be better from a Newcastle standpoint.
Arteta has his say
Arteta talking to Sky Sports:
“I think we fully deserved to win the game.
“We did it in a very dramatic manner at the end but so happy and so proud of the team.
“It’s a massive opportunity to make a statement and to prove to everybody and ourselves the team we are.
“The way we played, the courage, the determination, the intelligence and quality we showed today was against a very difficult team.”
Huge weekend for the title race
If Liverpool were to win and Arsenal lost which many fans thought could happen, Slot’s men would’ve seen themselves eight points clear and even at this early stage maybe too far for the Gunners to catch them.
However, instead the exact opposite happened where Liverpool conceded a 97th minute winner to the former Arsenal striker Eddie Nketiah and then Arsenal comeback to win their game in the 96th minute.
You couldn’t write what was going to happen!
Instead of potentially being eight points behind, they are now only two!
Merino post match comments
Merino speaks to Sky Sports after the game:
“Unbelievable to win these kind of games, late winners are the best.
“Even greater, coming back here is big for me, amazing memories, amazing place in my life.
“It couldn’t be better to win in the last minute and congrats to the boys.
“Maybe for the fans the win is more important.
“We have an amazing team, an amazing squad, staff and obviously amazing fans, so yeah we’re ready for it.”
I forgot Merino used to be a Newcastle player so that makes his goal even bigger!
Mikel’s mighty men
They have finally won at St James Park!
What a feeling that must be for the fans, players and manager.
So often, they experience misery when they come here and it looked like it was going to happen again until Arteta’s subs made the difference for them once again this season!
Winning the game from being down in the 84th minute is definitely signs of a team that can win the league.
