Nestor Bravo is talking about an all-out fight with Isaac “Pitbull” Cruz on Saturday night, which sounds courageous but tactically reckless. Cruz is already a heavy favorite, and Bravo risks making the mismatch worse by choosing the one style that gives him almost no chance.

Cruz defends his interim WBC light welterweight title against Bravo at Pechanga Arena in San Diego. The DAZN broadcast begins at 8 p.m. ET/5 p.m. PT.

“I’m prepared for everything that Pitbull brings,” Bravo said through a TGB Promotions press release. “He likes to fight, just like I do. If he does something different, then it’s my job to take advantage. We’re both going to try to push each other to another level. I’m a real 140-pounder that he’s going up against.”

Bravo’s size is one of the few advantages he brings into this fight. He is taller and has spent his career at light welterweight, while the 5’4″ Cruz climbed from lightweight. None of that helps Bravo if he plants his feet and trades short hooks with a compact pressure fighter.

Cruz wants opponents directly in front of him. He does his best work after closing the distance, when his short arms and low center of gravity allow him to rip hooks without giving up space. Bravo talking about pushing him into an “all-out” fight amounts to accepting Cruz’s terms.

The Puerto Rican challenger needs distance, lateral movement, and a disciplined jab. Making Cruz follow him would test the Mexican champion’s footwork and force him to spend energy crossing the ring. Trying to prove that he is the larger, tougher man will only shorten the night.

Cruz has added Eddy Reynoso to his corner and calls this the beginning of a “new era.” Major changes may not be necessary yet. If Bravo delivers the fight he is advertising, Cruz will receive another opponent willing to meet him in the center and exchange until somebody breaks.
