Marshall pass-rusher Mike Green is one of the NFL Draft’s top prospects from outside the Power Four conferences, but he comes with off-field concerns that could impact his stock.

Green faced two sexual assault allegations before breaking out with the Thundering Herd, one in high school and another while at the University of Virginia.

While Green has remained a projected first-round pick after a dominant 17-sack season at Marshall, the allegations undoubtedly will continue to be a topic as he enters the NFL and tries to develop into one of the league’s next great pass-rushers.

Here’s what you need to know about the sexual assault allegations against Green and what he has said about them.

Mike Green sexual assault allegations, explained

Green revealed at the NFL Combine that he has been accused of sexual assault twice and strongly denied both allegations.

Green faced an allegation in high school and another while at Virginia, leading to his dismissal from the Cavaliers program in 2022. He transferred to Marshall ahead of the 2023 season and spent the last two seasons with the Thundering Herd, though it was not known until February that a sexual assault allegation was the reason he was dismissed. He was never charged in either case.

The alleged assault was reported in the early morning of Aug. 29, 2022, but the investigation was discontinued, according to Charlottesville police. No injuries were reported as part of the police report.

Because the allegations weren’t publicly known until the combine in February, very few details about the exact nature of the claims exist.

Details about the allegation against Green during his time in high school are even more limited, but Virginia knew about it when he committed to the program and had him agree to a zero-tolerance policy.

Green addressed the claims during his media availability at the combine in February. Here’s a look at what he had to say.

What did Mike Green say about sexual assault allegations?

Green denied the allegations at the NFL Combine, telling reporters he was never actually questioned as part of any investigation.

“There’s accusations out there,” Green said. “I’ve never been questioned. I’ve never been asked. Nobody ever asked me a question about what happened before I departed from Virginia.”

Green said “just accusations” led to his dismissal and maintained, “I’ve done nothing wrong.” He also insisted he had the option to stay at Virginia.

“After I got suspended, I wanted a fresh start,” Green said, explaining that he wanted to “lay down a foundation” at a different school.

Green successfully did what he wanted to do, breaking through in 2024 with a monster 17-sack season after a quieter 2023 campaign. His performance put him on NFL radars and turned him into a consensus first-round talent, but whether off-field questions cause him to slip was one of the burning questions entering the draft.
