Jas Mathur says the Mayweather rematch is still on despite growing doubt, but the hold-up is now squarely on Floyd’s side.
MP Promotions CEO Jas Mathur pushed back on talk that the September bout between Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Manny Pacquiao has fallen apart, saying the fight remains a signed professional contest that has not been canceled. His comments, shared via The Ring, come as speculation has picked up over whether the deal would collapse before being finalized.
“Manny hasn’t made any official statement about the status of the fight against Floyd,” Mathur said. “Rather it’s a signed professional bout and hasn’t been canceled. People need to stop spreading rumors and/or fabricating stories.”
Mathur made clear the delay is tied to legal back-and-forth, not a breakdown in talks. “We’re finalizing a few details with Floyd’s team and waiting on their counsel to respond. The Netflix deadline is approaching and Floyd’s management team knows what they need to do.”
That specific point is crucial. It moves the spotlight off Pacquiao and forces Mayweather to either take the lead or be the reason for the delay.
The original fight in 2015 generated massive revenue but left many fans cold due to its one-sided nature. A second meeting only carries weight if both sides fully commit to a real contest, not a drawn-out negotiation that fades into nothing.
Fans under 25 don’t have a connection to Floyd Mayweather Jr. or Manny Pacquiao beyond highlights and stories. Their attention is on names like Gervonta Davis and Shakur Stevenson, fighters they’ve actually followed in real time. That reality feeds the skepticism.
Too many “professional” events in recent years have looked controlled, more like sparring than real fights. Mathur stressing that this is a sanctioned pro bout reads as an attempt to counter that perception. Until the opening bell rings, though, a lot of people won’t fully buy in.
