Madison Square Garden jeers Andre Drummond’s failed efforts to dislodge ball, cheers hero Karl-Anthony Towns

If you’re Andre Drummond, you can’t give Madison Square Garden this satisfaction.

Tyrese Maxey couldn’t dislodge a basketball that got stuck behind the backboard during Wednesday’s Game 2 between the Philadelphia 76ers and New York Knicks. So he handed the broom to Drummond, his 6-11 76ers teammate. Surely Drummond could get the job done.

But Drummond tried and also failed — repeatedly. Drummond poked at the basketball at least 11 times. He got it to bounce from one side of the stanchion to the other, but somehow couldn’t retrieve it from its perch.

The boos mounted from the MSG stands, and frustration mounted for Drummond. Knicks center Karl-Anthony Towns walked over, and Drummond threw up his hands. Drummond surrendered, and handed the broom to his frontcourt rival.

Towns got the ball free with one poke of the broom, much to the delight of the MSG crown, which erupted in cheers.

Drummond had nowhere to hide at that point as he remained on the court to watch Towns shoot a free throw. Thankfully for Drummond, he got a reprieve on the bench for Towns’ second free throw.
