The message comes one day before Monday’s WBO purse bid if Haney’s side fails to reach an agreement with Keyshawn beforehand. Davis has repeatedly pushed for the fight, viewing it as the ultimate opportunity to claim a world title.
Stopping Haney would give Keyshawn, 27, the type of signature victory that every contender chases. It would also answer questions about how he compares against one of the sport’s best-known names.
Becoming boxing’s new face is another matter. Winning over fight fans across the U.K. alongside the American market requires real star power. Defeating Haney in a tactical chess match won’t instantly transform Davis into a global superstar. Haney is a defensive specialist lacking explosive power, whose recent performances against Brian Norman Jr. or Jose Ramirez failed to excite audiences.
Inside the ring, Keyshawn’s composure under fire remains a major issue. When opponents land solid shots, he sometimes loses his cool and resorts to wrestling tactics. Fans saw it against Miguel Madueno when the bout turned ugly, and again in his May rematch with Nahir Albright, where sheer frustration over holding led Keyshawn to execute an illegal body slam that cost him two points. That habit of losing his head and turning fights into dirty grappling matches turns off fight fans who expect disciplined brilliance from a star.
To earn true crossover stardom, Keyshawn needs more than a single win over a defensive champion. He would likely need to clear out the entire welterweight division, sweeping through marquee names like Ryan Garcia, Conor Benn, Rolly Romero, Teofimo Lopez, Richardson Hitchins, plus potential moving contenders like Andy Hiraoka and Ernesto Mercado.
If the fight gets finalized, Keyshawn will get his opportunity to back up his claim inside the ring, but proving he belongs at the top spot will require a far longer journey.
