A miserable season for the New York Mets may have become even worse.
Juan Soto left the Mets’ 4-2 loss to the Los Angeles Dodgers on Friday during the sixth inning with soreness in his left calf, according to the team. Soto batted twice in the game and drew two walks before leaving for pinch-hitter Jorge Polanco.
Following the game, Mets manager Andy Green told reporters (including ESPN’s Jorge Castillo) that Soto will undergo an MRI exam on his left calf on Saturday. He conceded that the star outfielder could go on the injured list.
Soto, 27, went on the injured list in early April with a left calf strain and was sidelined for two weeks. He has been struggling with discomfort in that area ever since. For the past seven games, Soto has started at designated hitter, rather than his customary right field, in hopes of reducing stress on that calf.
Despite the injury, Soto has a slash line of .283/.404/.539 this season in 357 plate appearances with 21 home runs and 52 RBI. His .404 on-base percentage leads the National League and he’s tied for second in MLB with a .947 OPS.
