Jermall Charlo is focused on getting through his long-awaited return later this month, but he already has a potential next opponent in mind if all goes according to plan.
The former WBC middleweight champion will end his lengthy layoff when he faces Koen Mazoudier on the July 25 undercard of Errol Spence Jr. vs. Tim Tszyu in Sydney, Australia. If Charlo is victorious, he says he’d welcome a move to super middleweight to challenge WBA champion Jaime Munguia.
Charlo made it clear that Munguia is one of the names he likes for his next fight.
“I think that’s a good fight for me,” said Jermall to The Ring.
The matchup would mark Charlo’s first bid for a world title at 168 pounds. After spending years as one of boxing’s top middleweights, the 36-year-old has fought only twice since June 2021, defeating Jose Benavidez Jr. by unanimous decision in November 2023 and Thomas LaManna in May 2025.
Jermall’s inactivity has left questions about where he stands against the division’s elite, making the Mazoudier fight a crucial test before any title opportunity.
Munguia captured the WBA super middleweight title earlier this year and has quickly established himself as one of the division’s leading names. A victory over Mazoudier could put Jermall in position to pursue that fight, provided negotiations can be reached.
Charlo first has to defeat Mazoudier in Australia after another lengthy layoff. If he can shake off the rust with an impressive victory, a move to 168 pounds and a shot at Munguia’s WBA title could quickly become a realistic option.
