Jaron “Boots” Ennis has already identified the opponent he wants after stopping Xander Zayas to unify the WBA and WBO junior middleweight titles last weekend. Asked who he wants next, Ennis didn’t hesitate.
“I want Fundora,” Ennis said to Put ‘Cha Gloves On. “Bring on that tall towering [inferno]. We’re gonna chop him down, chop him down easy.”
‘Boots’ has repeatedly expressed interest in facing the biggest names at junior middleweight, with Fundora now firmly in his sights as he continues pursuing every major title in the division.
Ennis has long targeted a showdown with Sebastian Fundora, who holds the WBC title. A victory would move the Philadelphia native another step closer to becoming the undisputed champion at 154 pounds after adding Zayas’ WBO belt to his WBA title. Getting the fight made, however, may not be that simple.
Fundora’s promoter, Sampson Lewkowicz, recently said the WBC champion will next defend his title against mandatory challenger Ermal Hadribeaj, who earned the No. 1 position by defeating Bakary Samake in May. Lewkowicz added that a unification with Ennis is more likely to take place sometime in 2027 after the mandatory obligation is fulfilled.
Unless the WBC grants an exception or Hadribeaj agrees to step aside, Ennis may have to wait before getting the fight he wants. Even so, the newly unified champion has made it clear that Fundora sits at the top of his target list as he continues his pursuit of all four belts.
