JAMIE VARDY has his “heart set” on a move to Celtic, and an emotional reunion with Brendan Rodgers – as he targets playing on until he is FORTY!
SunSport can reveal the ex-England ace is “desperate” to complete a move to Scotland before the window slams shut.
And although Brendan Rodgers is keen to add the former Leicester City legend to his squad he faces a battle to secure his signature.
That’s because West Ham, Brentford and Wrexham are all still tracking the forward as they look to bolster their own front lines.
Vardy, 38, has been searching for a new club all summer but has been keeping himself fit with a personal trainer.
Sources close to the star say he is ready to play, and still believes he can compete at the highest level for one or maybe two seasons.
It means he could still be playing top level football until he’s 40.
A source told SunSport: “Jamie still believes he can play week in week out and has a lot to offer.
“He’s a model professional and is keeping himself in great condition.
“He’d love to move to Celtic and really has his heart set on that move.
“He loved playing under Brendan and thinks he could be a massive benefit to the team up there. In fact, ever since it became clear Celtic were up for the deal Jamie’s been desperate to make it happen.
“But other clubs are keen to so time will tell. But one thing is for sure he won’t be without a team at the end of August.”
Celtic would love to add Vardy to their squad and would welcome his experience as they look to go further into Europe this season as well as retaining their title.
But Vardy’s Premier League experience is also tempting other clubs in England’s top divisions.
West Ham – who failed to score in their opening game against Sunderland – are one side keeping an eye on Vardy.
Graham Potter urgently needs firepower and Vardy could bring the goals he needs.
And Brentford, who still face the prospect of losing Yoane Wissa, are in the market for a forward.
They lost on the opening day and will want to bounce back quickly to get their season back on track.
Meanwhile Wrexham, who have been linked with the player all Summer, remain actively interested.
The Welsh side have started the season poorly, with two league defeats.
Securing Vardy would give them a massive boost and would also provide massive commercial benefits.
Vardy and wife Becky are believed to be intrigued by the idea of becoming a part of the Wrexham project, which has featured on Disney as a fly-on-the-wall hit show.
