James Toney doesn’t think Floyd Schofield is ready for Gervonta “Tank” Davis, and he made that clear while reacting to the WBA ordering the unbeaten contender into mandatory negotiations for Tank’s lightweight title.

Schofield Sr. recently confirmed that negotiations are underway after the WBA formally ordered the fight. Toney, however, says the #1-ranked contender is being moved too quickly against a fighter at Davis’ level.

“I don’t think he ready. Floyd Schofield. He will get knocked out,” said Toney to MillCity Boxing when asked about the ordered matchup.

“Nothing. Nothing.”

Toney compared the possible fight to Tank Davis’ knockout win over Frank Martin, saying Schofield has not faced the kind of opposition needed before stepping into a title fight against Davis.

“He be like Frank Martin. You know what I’m saying?” said Toney about Schofield.

“I’ve never seen the kid fight before, but I can tell by his trainer and his father don’t know s*** about boxing. He never fought nobody in light-duty fights. He fought nobody. He’s been fighting C-class fighters being built up the right way.”

Toney believes Schofield’s team is making a mistake by taking the fight now instead of allowing him more time to develop.

“He went in the wrong way by fighting Tank first. Like I said before, he needs time to get ready. His time is not now.”

Toney did soften his stance slightly later in the interview, saying he hopes Schofield performs well if the fight is finalized.

“I hope the kid well. I hope he do very well. But complications for Tank? No, not at all,” said Toney.
