Jaime Munguia could return to the ring in May as part of the undercard for Oleksandr Usyk’s heavyweight title defense against Rico Verhoeven, according to information reported by ESPN KnockOut journalist Salvador Rodriguez. The possibility connects Munguia’s next fight to one of the more unusual championship events currently on the boxing calendar.

Salvador reported that sources informed ESPN that Jaime Munguia is among the fighters being considered for the event. The card is scheduled for May 23 at the Pyramids of Giza, where Usyk is set to defend his WBC heavyweight title against Verhoeven in an event promoted under the “Glory in Giza” banner.

The mention of Munguia suggests that his next fight is now being discussed after his most recent outing, a decision victory over Bruno Surace in their rematch last May in Riyadh. Munguia had been stopped by Surace in their first meeting five months earlier, a setback that came after his decision loss to Saul “Canelo” Alvarez in their May 2024 super middleweight title fight.

One possible opponent has also been discussed. Rodriguez reported that a fight against José Armando Reséndiz, the WBA super middleweight champion, has been considered for Munguia’s comeback, although the matchup has not been finalized and remains under discussion.

Munguia continues training with Eddy Reynoso, who also works with Canelo Alvarez. The partnership kept Munguia inside the same training camp even after the two fighters shared the ring in 2024.

Rodriguez also indicated that Munguia could appear later this year on a proposed event built around Mexican fighters facing international opponents, a card expected to be headlined by Canelo.

For now, Munguia’s next opponent has not been confirmed. The discussions around the Usyk event suggest that his return could take place on a major international stage if he is added to the May 23 lineup in Egypt.

If Munguia appears on that card, it would place his next fight on the undercard of Usyk’s heavyweight title defense against Verhoeven at the Pyramids of Giza.

The report from Rodriguez, therefore, points to the possibility that Munguia’s next bout could come as part of the same event built around Usyk’s latest championship defense.
