The finish rescued the bout from becoming a solid but unspectacular points win for Opetaia. He had been busier from the opening round, controlling range with his southpaw jab and beating Mikaelian to the punch without tearing through him. Mikaelian remained patient and looked for counter rights rather than trying to match Opetaia’s output. That approach gave him isolated success, but he spent too many rounds waiting for the Australian to make a mistake.
His best moment came in the seventh. A right hand caught Opetaia clean and briefly wobbled him, showing that Mikaelian still carried enough power to change the fight. Opetaia held, recovered, and returned to his earlier rhythm without allowing the challenger to build on the shot.
By the ninth, Mikaelian’s decreasing activity gave Opetaia more freedom to attack. The champion found his opening, landed in combination and kept working while Mikaelian attempted to smother the offense. Dock’s stoppage prevented additional punishment against a fighter described by some observers as knocked out on his feet.
The WBC title was not attached to the contest despite Mikaelian arriving in Las Vegas as its champion. The sanctioning body had ordered him to defend against David Benavidez and threatened to strip him for accepting Opetaia instead. Don King Productions also sent a cease-and-desist letter claiming promotional rights, but the fight proceeded with only the Ring and Zuffa belts at stake.
That mess should not obscure Mikaelian’s willingness to face the division’s best fighter. He chose Opetaia when the safer business decision would have been protecting his WBC position against a man moving up from 175 pounds. The choice cost him his fourth professional defeat, but it gave boxing the stronger contest. Opetaia was not flawless. Mikaelian found him with the type of counter right that a sharper or more aggressive opponent may exploit.
Yet the champion’s response was more important than the brief scare: he recovered, reclaimed control and forced the stoppage two rounds later.
The Australian remains the leading cruiserweight at 200 pounds. His next challenge is turning that status into undisputed recognition rather than collecting another promotional belt that carries less value than the major titles still outside his possession.
