Jack Catterall says he’ll be watching from ringside when Rolando “Rolly” Romero defends his WBA welterweight title against Teofimo Lopez, while making it clear he expects to face the winner next.

“It’s a sport full of politics, but it is what it is. The winner of this will immediately have to fight me, so I’ll be ringside for this one. Teo wins this,” Catterall wrote on X.

Catterall’s comments came after news broke that Romero and Lopez had agreed to a deal for a fight targeted for August 22 in Las Vegas. Lopez later confirmed during a broadcast that the bout is happening.

The British southpaw captured the WBA “Regular” welterweight title in May with a unanimous decision over Shakhram Giyasov. Under WBA rules, the holder of the secondary belt is typically positioned to challenge the organization’s primary champion, although mandatory title opportunities have often been delayed by negotiations, exceptions, or unification plans.

If the Romero-Lopez fight goes ahead as planned, Catterall appears intent on making his presence felt before a potential title shot. His prediction favors Lopez, but he also signaled that his focus is on securing the next fight regardless of who leaves Las Vegas with the championship.

For Catterall, the Romero-Lopez fight represents the clearest path yet to a major world title opportunity. Whether that opportunity materializes is another matter. Mandatory challengers have frequently been left waiting when bigger-money fights become available, and Catterall’s next move may depend as much on boxing politics as his ranking.
