After all the news surrounding the uncertain future of the LIV Golf League over the last month, the circuit returned to competitive action last week with the staging of LIV Golf Virginia held at Trump National Washington.
The tournament was won by Australia’s – and Ripper GC team member – Lucas Herbert, who led from start to finish at the 72-hole event, with rounds of 64, 63, 68 and 69 giving him a four-shot win over Sergio Garcia, with Bryson DeChambeau a further shot back in third.
Herbert, 30, whose impressive wire-to-wire victory was his first individual trophy on the LIV Golf circuit, said: “I spent about 60-odd holes with the lead on my own, so it was nice to get to over the finish line and achieve a goal that I’ve had for since I joined the league some two-and-a-half years ago.”
The competition for the team title was a much closer affair with the 4Aces winning their third team title of the season following a play-off.
Fuelled by Anthony Kim’s 10-under 62, the 4Aces forced a two-man playoff with Fireballs GC, and won on the first playoff hole, with Kim and Thomas Detry each making par at the par-4 18th to beat Josele Ballester’s par and David Puig’s bogey.
LIV Golf League’s next event is at Asiad Country Club in Korea from May 28-31, and then LIV Golf Andalucia at Valderrama (June 4-7), after which it takes a break before returning with its only UK event at JCB Golf & Country Club in Staffordshire from July 23-26.
