The victory represented far more than revenge. Armstrong collected his first major championship recognition and established himself as the division’s most dangerous contender. His relentless performance also caught the attention of entertainer Al Jolson, who later helped buy out Armstrong’s contract and opened the door to the opportunities that eventually led to one of boxing’s greatest careers.
Arizmendi had frustrated Armstrong twice before, winning decisions in Mexico City in November 1934 and again in Los Angeles two months later. This time, the outcome never appeared in doubt.
From the opening bell, Armstrong’s nonstop pressure dictated every exchange. Nicknamed “Homicide Hank,” he poured punches together from every angle, refusing to give the defending champion a moment to recover. Arizmendi absorbed tremendous punishment but refused to fall, surviving every round despite appearing close to exhaustion on several occasions.
Although Armstrong never scored a knockdown, newspaper accounts described the contest as one of the most punishing defeats of Arizmendi’s career. The Mexican star remained on his feet through sheer determination while Armstrong piled up round after round with relentless work.
World featherweight champion Petey Sarron watched from ringside and reportedly left deeply impressed by what he witnessed. Less than a year later, Armstrong stopped Sarron to win the universally recognized featherweight championship, validating the impression he created that night in Los Angeles.
Earning $2,000 for the victory provided Armstrong with a respectable payday in 1936. Arizmendi reportedly required several months away from the ring to recover from the punishment he absorbed.
Success over Arizmendi carried into the following year when Armstrong stopped Petey Sarron for the universally recognized featherweight championship. He later added world titles at lightweight and welterweight, becoming the first boxer to hold championships in three weight classes at the same time.
