Hamzah Sheeraz Says Turki Changed What’s Possible

Hamzah Sheeraz believes boxing has entered a different era under Turki Alalshikh, with the unbeaten British contender already discussing major fights at 168 pounds before his world title bout against Alem Begic in Egypt.

Sheeraz will fight Begic for the vacant WBO super middleweight title on Saturday’s Oleksandr Usyk-Rico Verhoeven card at the Pyramids of Giza. The event has become one of the most unusual settings in recent boxing history, something Sheeraz says would have sounded impossible only a few years ago.

“Ever since his excellency got involved in the sport of boxing, there’s nothing that’s been unimaginable to do. There’s no dream big enough,” said Hamzah Sheeraz to OOOSCH TV.

“Massive, massive credit and kudos to him for giving fighters such as myself the opportunity to fight in these historic areas. Who would have thought I’d be saying I’m fighting for a world title in Egypt in front of the pyramids? If you asked me that, however many years ago, I’d never ever imagine it.”

The 25-year-old also looked beyond the Begic fight and spoke openly about the options he believes could open up if he captures the WBO belt this weekend.

“God willing, I’ll get over Saturday, I’ll get the belt, and the options are endless to be fair. The 168 division is a massive division. Great fighters,” said Sheeraz.

“I could easily get a unification, I reckon. Whether that be against any of the other champions, or Munguia, or whoever it is. But yeah, one step at a time.”

The comments are likely to attract attention from fans already discussing possible future fights involving Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez, even though Canelo is scheduled to face Christian Mbilli in September.

Sheeraz admitted during the interview that he did not know much about Begic before the fight was ordered, but said the unbeaten Bosnian is simply the opponent standing between him and his first world title.
