Former Denver Broncos wide receiver Lil’Jordan Humphrey appeared to have found a new home this offseason, signing a deal with the New York Giants just about six weeks ago. His tenure with the team is already over.
The Giants announced that they have released Humphrey on Friday. Why they signed him, we’ll never know.
The Giants did not select a wide receiver in the draft, but they did sign six of them (DaQuan Felton, Antwane Wells Jr., Beaux Collins, Dalen Cambre, Nate McCollum and Jordan Bly) as undrafted free agents. The team likely sees promise in more than one of them and wants them to get every opportunity to win a spot on the roster, making Humphrey expendable.
Humphrey spent the past two seasons in Denver, catching 44 passes for 455 yards and four touchdowns. Undrafted out of Texas in 2019, he signed with the New Orleans Saints and spent three years there, playing under Sean Payton.
Payton has always liked Humphrey and there were reports that the team tried to bring him back this offseason before he chose to head to New York. One has to wonder if the Broncos could circle back and look at bringing Humphrey back into the mix. The Broncos may have been interested in a third year with Humphrey but since then, have signed Trent Sherfield in free agency, drafted Pat Bryant and signed three undrafted wide receivers, Jerjuan Newton, Joaquin Davis and Courtney Jackson.
For his career, Humphrey has 62 receptions for 770 yards and seven touchdowns.
