Floyd Schofield Jr. has started to question whether his own team is moving fast enough to secure him a world title shot, pointing directly to promotional handling as the reason he is still waiting.
Schofield said he has been positioned near the top of the rankings for close to two years and expected his recent training stretch to lead into a title fight. That did not happen, and he made it clear he believes more could have been done on his side to push the process forward. “That falls on our promoter,” Schofield said to Punsh Drunk Boxing, saying that they need to “step on it a little faster” if he is going to land the opportunity he has been working toward.
The unbeaten lightweight Schofield (19-0, 13 KOs) described staying in camp with the belief that a title fight was imminent, only to see the situation change without a clear explanation. He said the delay has come while other fighters from his generation have already moved into title positions, including Abdullah Mason, creating a contrast he finds difficult to ignore, given their shared time coming up in the sport.
Schofield, 23, also pointed to the type of fights being made elsewhere, referencing vacant title bouts and matchups he believes have accelerated other careers. He suggested that stronger pressure from his own side could have placed him in those same situations rather than leaving him waiting as a top contender without a confirmed title date.
Floyd Jr. stressed that the issue is not financial, saying he is earning regardless of the opponent, but remains focused on becoming a world champion. He’s annoyed because, despite being highly ranked, he’s not taking part in some of the fights taking place around him. He’s watching other fighters like Mason, Lamont Roach Jr., and William Zepeda get opportunities for big fights.
A fighter can only stay patient for so long before he starts asking why others are moving and he isn’t.
