Fans slam Naseem Hamed after Johnny Nelson swipe on podcast

Naseem Hamed drew a strong reaction online after taking aim at Johnny Nelson during a recent podcast appearance, with many fans quickly siding with the former cruiserweight champion and analyst.

“There was only ever one snake in that gym. If he was fighting in my own backyard, I’d pull the curtains. We are far, far apart in ability and in skill and the world knows that,” said Hamed to talkSport Boxing.

“I said to Spencer Oliver, I’m not talking about him. He doesn’t deserve me to speak about him. I’ve said what I’ve had to say about him before. Right now, I’m not talking about him. He doesn’t deserve my voice about him.”

Replies on X were overwhelmingly hostile toward Naseem Hamed, with many users accusing him of sounding bitter, disrespectful, and needlessly combative in his comments about Johnny Nelson.

Users praised Nelson’s reputation within boxing and broadcasting, describing him as respected, grounded, and well-liked by fans. Several replies also said Hamed had damaged his own image by reopening old grudges from the Brendan Ingle gym years.

While many still acknowledged Hamed as one of Britain’s most talented and entertaining fighters, they argued Nelson has carried himself better since retirement and built a stronger reputation outside the ring.

Others pointed to Nelson’s long cruiserweight title reign and his second career in television as proof that he earned respect in a different way.

Only a small minority treated the exchange as harmless banter between two old names from the same era. Most of the reaction sided with Nelson and viewed Hamed’s comments as unnecessary.

Hamed still commands attention whenever he speaks, but this time the backing appeared to go firmly to Nelson. You’ve got a guy who hasn’t fought in nearly 24 years, yet he’s carrying these Wincobank grudges like they happened yesterday.

Naz had the higher peak, but Nelson had the longer reign and a seamless transition into media. Seeing Nelson as the “voice of boxing” on TV might be the ultimate irritant for someone who feels they should still be the center of the universe.

Unlike Nelson, who retired on top as a champion, Naz’s career ended with a whimper after the Barrera loss and a lackluster win over Manuel Calvo. That kind of exit often leaves a fighter looking for targets to blame for how the story ended.
