Errol Spence vs. Tim Tszyu Presser Gets Heated

Errol Spence (28-1, 22 KOs) makes his long-awaited return to the ring after a 3-year layoff when he steps into the ring against dangerous contender Tim Tszyu (27-3, 18 KOs) on Saturday, July 25th in Australia.

At today’s launch press conference, Errol made the assurance that he wouldn’t return to the ring if he wasn’t confident that he could perform at the same caliber level he’s accustomed to. The same sentiment was shared by his new trainer, Ronnie Shields, who’s seen him work in the gym. The fight will be at a catchweight of 158 pounds. Errol stated he’s earned the right to fight at a catchweight, and if he wants to fight at a catchweight, then he will.

The presser got a little heated when Tszyu was making a comparison of this fight with the one his father, Kostya Tszyu, had with Mexican legend Julio Cesar Chavez. Errol did not agree with Tim’s assessment. “I think it’s cute, I mean that ain’t…that ain’t what that is. This is Errol Spence versus Tim Tszyu. He is no caliber of this fight, I mean, his daddy. So he can’t compare himself to his Pops. He fighting me, trying to get out of his father’s shadow. So we’ll see come July 26, if he can get out of those shadows?” This began a heated exchange where Tszyu called Spence a disrespectful f**k. They then got into Tim’s social media posts, where he criticized Errol. This back-and-forth exchange went on for a few minutes. The fight will be the biggest fight in Australian history, bigger than Manny Pacquiao versus Jeff Horn, and after their heated exchange, it will only get bigger.

After the presser Tim took questions from the media, when asked of the current champions who he’ll like to face he said, “When you get to a certain level you’re not really worries about champions. I mean, like I said, yes, I wanted the best when I was young. I’ll still get one if the opportunity comes, but I only want great names.” Spence stated his desire is not necessarily titles but great fights with big names. This is his first fight back, and he will take it on a fight-by-fight basis. He’ll consider fighting anywhere between 154 through 160 and will take it on a fight-by-fight basis. Considering potential opponents and catchweights if needed.

As for Tim, he’s still navigating through recent career struggles, having suffered three losses in a four-fight stretch. He’s won his last two against Anthony Velazquez and Denis Nurja. Both were unanimous decision victories, and although Tszyu won, he feels he could have performed better.

have made changes to their teams and both have new trainers. He recently made yet another change to his team by hiring the services of trainer Jeff Fenech. He feels Fenech was a boxer whose style was similar to his when he was boxing, and he could learn a lot from someone like him. A venue hasn’t been chosen for this event, but it will certainly be one that can hold a capacity for what is being sold as the biggest fight in Australia’s history.
