The former welterweight champion embraced his “Big Fish” nickname while previewing Saturday’s fight against Tszyu in Australia, predicting the aggressive style that carried him to world titles will be on display when he returns after a three-year absence.

“There’s going to be another shark attack, and hopefully that’ll be the end of the shark attacks,” said Spence to Premier Boxing Champions.

The prediction reflects the identity Spence built during his championship run. At his best, he overwhelmed opponents with relentless pressure, wearing them down until they broke under the pace of his attack.

Max Kellerman recalled the qualities that made Spence one of boxing’s elite fighters.

“Spence was an excellent welterweight. I thought Spence could compete in any era. High-volume puncher. He could box when he wanted to outbox Mikey Garcia behind the jab. He could slug when he wanted to. Had one of the all-time great… Spence and Porter. Errol Spence was an excellent fighter,” said Kellerman to the Inside Ring Show.

Timothy Bradley also believes Spence selected the right fight for his return, arguing the lengthy break allowed his body to recover before taking on Tszyu.

“He found the right opponent for him to get his confidence back. He took enough break, long enough break. Boxing is way better when Errol Spence Jr. is involved,” said Bradley.

Saturday’s fight will determine whether Spence can still fight like the predator he describes. If the relentless version that ruled the welterweight division returns after three years away, Tszyu may discover exactly what Spence meant by another “shark attack.”
