Ernesto Mercado believes the quickest route to the biggest fights of his career isn’t through public callouts. He plans to earn a mandatory position that leaves a world champion with far fewer options.
The light welterweight contender said it has been frustrating watching potential matchups disappear despite his willingness to face the division’s top names. Mercado pointed to talks that never materialized with Frank Martin and Arnold Barboza Jr., but his recent climb in the rankings has reinforced his belief that patience will eventually pay off.
“It’s definitely frustrating. Especially a lot of these guys. Frank Martin, we were supposed to be fighting. I got guys like Barbosa too that I was supposed to fight way back when. They kind of pump-faked me a little bit,” said Mercado to Fighthype. “But seeing myself get higher in the rankings, I’m four now, five in the WBO and IBF. It’s a little bit encouraging because once I hit that mandatory spot, they’re either going to have to vacate or fight me. In that sense, I’m happy where I’m at.”
Mercado views the rankings as the surest way to secure the opportunities he has been chasing. A mandatory challenger gains leverage that voluntary contenders do not have, making every climb up the rankings meaningful.
His next opportunity comes August 15 against former world title challenger Emanuel Tagoe. Mercado expects the 37-year-old veteran to offer resistance, but not for long.
“I think Tagoe knows that I punch just like Ryan Garcia does. But I do a lot of things way better than Ryan Garcia. I cut off the ring well. I bring solid boxing fundamentals, and my power sits a level above Ryan Garcia,” said Mercado. “We’re going to test it on fight night, and I don’t think Tagoe makes it out. I’ll give him the benefit of the doubt. I’ll give him five rounds.”
A convincing victory would not move Mercado into a mandatory position immediately, but it would add another statement performance as he continues closing the distance on the fighters ranked ahead of him.
