Ernesto “Tito” Mercado’s fight against Emmanuel Tagoe has been canceled after Tagoe came in 10 pounds over the contracted 140-pound limit for Saturday’s card in Atlanta.
The sides initially tried to negotiate an agreement that would allow the bout to continue, but those talks failed. Dan Rafael reported Friday that Mercado-Tagoe is now off the Claressa Shields vs. Kaye Scott card on DAZN.
The cancellation is particularly frustrating for Mercado after his recent move to Salita Promotions and Wynn Records. He had complained about fighting only four times over the previous two years and wanted a schedule that would keep him in the ring more frequently.
Saturday was supposed to begin that process.
Mercado (17-0, 16 KOs) was also using fight week to call for much bigger names at light welterweight. The 24-year-old mentioned Shakur Stevenson, Emiliano Vargas and Frank Martin as opponents he wants next.
Tagoe was supposed to give Mercado another fight before he pursued that level of opposition. Instead, Mercado loses the date entirely after his opponent arrived far beyond the contracted limit.
A small miss might have left room for Mercado’s team to accept a financial penalty. Ten pounds is a different situation at 140.
Mercado would have been giving away substantial weight against a fighter who did not have to make anything close to the same cut. With Mercado trying to position himself for major fights, accepting those circumstances would have brought unnecessary risk.
The cancellation leaves Mercado searching for another date just as he is trying to move toward bigger fights.
Losing Saturday’s appearance interrupts that plan before Mercado even gets started with his new promotional team.
