Ellise Rymer was crowned English Women’s Amateur Champion at Moor Park Golf Club, after a thrilling final against Isabella Kent.
It marks an incredible week for Lincoln golfer Rymer, who qualified for AIG Women’s Open Final Qualifying on Monday, before four days of golf in Hertfordshire in which she became a national champion, joining a list of former winners including Bronte Law and Trish Johnson.
She said: “It’s unbelievable. I feel like I’ve worked so hard on my golf over the last few years and today it all came together, so I’m super happy to win.
“It’s been a dream come true. Playing well on Monday and winning here today has topped it all off really. This is definitely my biggest achievement to date – my last big win was the Scottish U16s in 2021, so a long time ago!
“It’s so great to get across the line and I think this stands me in good stead heading into August and back into the college season (in the USA).”
In a pulsating final against Castle Royle’s Kent, Rymer made an early birdie in a match where there was never more than a hole in it till the 18th. Kent made an incredible eagle putt from off the green on the par-5 13th to draw level, before Rymer edged back ahead on 15.
Despite a wayward tee shot on 16, Rymer managed to make a tremendous par recovery to force a half, as Kent couldn’t get up-and-down from the edge of the green. Rymer had a chance to make a mammoth drive count on 17 but both made pars – however she sealed the deal with a fine tee shot and rolling in the birdie putt on 18 – just as she did in the morning semi-final, to win the title.
She added: “Beating Jasmine Points in the quarter-final yesterday was really tough. I was so tired and that gave me motivation going into today and this morning’s match against England Girls’ Squad member Mia Ingham – she’s really good, so I was really happy to get through that.”
Asked about where she’d be putting the trophy, and celebrations, the 21-year-old added: “I’m sure mum will find a place for the trophy – probably on the dining room table for a while! Not sure if I’m allowed to say this, but I’m going to celebrate this one by having a few beers!”
Earlier in the day during the semi-finals, Kent flew into an early 2-up lead against Summer Carash but the Minchinhampton golfer dug in, before Kent went 3-up through 11. Carash won the next two holes to put the pressure on but Kent pulled away to win 14 and 15 and sealed a 3&2 win.
The other semi-final saw Rymer go 2-up through two, but Mia Ingham battled back to be all-square through 11. After halving the next three holes, a wayward tee shot on 15 cost Ingham, before Rymer holed a good birdie putt on the par-5 16th. A monster drive from Ingham just shy of the 17th yielded birdie to take it down the last, but Rymer held her nerve to land one close to the 18th hole and rolled in the birdie to win 2-up – a scoreline she went on to repeat in the final.
