“He’s a young kid, and he has so much talent that’s locked in,” McIntyre said on the Brian Custer channel. “He just needs the right person to bring it out. Him coming to camp, I just lick my chops because I look at that kid like, man, he can be another Bud Crawford.

“One, he loves to train. Two, he’s eager to fight any and everybody. He’s always in the gym.”

Johnson might look youthful next to the 38-year-old Crawford, but he is far from an early-career fighter. Crawford captured his first world title at 26 and collected belts in two weight classes by Johnson’s current age. Johnson remains trapped between the prospect and contender levels.

That progression is unusual for a former United States Olympian. Johnson arrived in the professional ranks with an extensive amateur foundation, including a run at the Tokyo Games where he lost to two-time Olympic gold medalist Roniel Iglesias. Boxers with that background normally move quickly because they do not require years of introductory matchmaking. Top Rank has taken the opposite route.

Ricardo Quiroz pushed Johnson to a majority decision. Jimerr Espinosa took him to a split decision. Tarik Zaina and Yomar Alamo also made him work harder than anticipated. Janelson Figueroa Bocachica had already begun fading before Johnson secured a points win over him.

His fourth-round stoppage of Nicklaus Flaz remains his best recent performance. Johnson then went ten rounds with Christopher Guerrero in July, sweeping the scorecards while once again showing little finishing power.

Eight knockouts across his career would matter less if Johnson had been facing durable fringe contenders. He has not. The schedule has featured developmental opponents, declining fighters and limited opposition. Against that level, a boxer drawing Crawford comparisons should produce a much higher stoppage rate.

McIntyre became Johnson’s head trainer for the Guerrero bout. It would be unfair to judge the partnership on a single outing, yet it is fair to question why the ability McIntyre praises is still struggling to surface this deep into a professional career.

Johnson called out WBO welterweight champion Devin Haney after defeating Guerrero. Their personal hostility might generate interest, but Johnson has skipped the necessary step of proving himself against an established top-ten fighter.

Rohan Polanco, whom Johnson previously mentioned, offers the type of test that makes sense. Until Johnson defeats a genuine welterweight contender, the Haney talk and Crawford comparisons represent ambition completely detached from reality.

Top Rank is still treating a 28-year-old Olympian with kid gloves. Time is running out to discover if the champion McIntyre envisions actually exists.
