Promoter Dana White announced today that the performance bonus for Canelo Alvarez vs. Terence Crawford will be “over six figures” on September 13th. In other words, over a million for their biggest “fight of the century’ on Netflix at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas.
Rich Fighters, Extra Millions
With the huge purses that Canelo (63-2-2, 39 KOs) and Crawford (41-0, 31 KOs) are receiving, a KO bonus of more than a million might not register. Canelo is reportedly receiving $150 million, and Crawford is reportedly receiving $50 million.
So, if the performance bonus is a little over a million, that won’t make much difference to either of them. Obviously, they’ll gladly take it.
White’s Fight Bonus Announcement
“The performance that night is going to be over six figures. We’re still talking about it. It’s going to be a big number for whoever wins the performance that bonus that night,” said Dana White at today’s New York press conference about the KO bonus for the Canelo Alvarez vs. Terence Crawford fight.
Build Better Fight Undercard
A better idea is to use the performance bonus money and spend it on building a good undercard for the fight. The names mentioned thus far haven’t generated much interest from fans. Some of them will never be world champion-level or even good contenders.
Using the performance bonus money on building the skeletal undercard would be a far better idea than feeding the rich. Fans don’t want to sleep through a boring undercard and need coffee to wake up for the main event between Canelo and Crawford.
Those two are already going to be incredibly wealthy from the money they make from their fights. They don’t need an extra million to motivate them to go for a knockout.
Bonus: Motivation or Waste?
If they can’t push hard to score a KO with the money from the giant purses to get a KO, enticing them to put in more effort with a $1 million+ performance bonus probably doesn’t do much. Crawford doesn’t stand any chance of getting it anyway because he can’t even punch at 154, and he’s showing signs of age, hitting 38 on September 28th.
