Dana White believes boxing has lost younger American sports fans and needs years of reconstruction to win them back. The Zuffa Boxing promoter says the UFC now commands the audience that once followed fighters coming through the American amateur system.
“Now when you look at the United States, the younger demo doesn’t care about boxing here,” White said to DAZN Boxing. “There used to be the Olympic box-offs on network television, and you cared who was coming out of the Olympics for America or England or wherever it might be. The last guy was Floyd Mayweather that anybody knew or cared about. My goal over the next five, six years is to rebuild boxing in America.”
White is largely correct. The NFL and NBA consume much of the attention from this generation of American sports fans. Among combat sports, the UFC has taken the position boxing occupied during earlier eras.
The UFC gives viewers one recognizable brand, a steady schedule, and leading fighters competing within the same system. Boxing scatters its talent across promoters, broadcasters, and sanctioning bodies. A casual fan may hear about a major bout without knowing where to find the next meaningful contest.
Even WWE maintains a stronger year-round connection with that audience. It provides weekly programming and keeps its personalities visible between major shows. Boxing briefly returns to popular culture when a crossover attraction competes, then disappears once the card ends.
That explains Zuffa’s interest in Ryan Garcia. White noted that Ryan’s huge social media following reaches people who otherwise ignore the sport. His value extends beyond ticket sales and punching power. He provides access to a generation boxing has failed to retain.
A popular fighter cannot repair the American market by himself. Ryan may bring viewers through the door, but Zuffa must give them reasons to remain after he leaves the ring. That requires regular cards, clear rankings, and fights that connect one show to the next.
Boxing can still produce a larger single-night spectacle than almost any sport. White’s challenge is transforming those isolated explosions of interest into a habit.
