The biggest storyline of the entire National Football League Draft arguably was with Colorado Buffaloes star quarterback Shedeur Sanders’ dramatic slide from a projected top-three overall pick to getting drafted in the fifth round.

All eyes were on Sanders as name after name was called until the Cleveland Browns ultimately drafted him in the fifth round. Five quarterbacks came off the board before Sanders, including Dillon Gabriel, who the Browns drafted before Sanders.

In the aftermath of the NFL Draft, theories have been tossed around as to why a projected top pick fell so far. While speaking on ‘The Invasion’ on Sportsradio 96.7 FM/1310 The Ticket (KTCK-AM), Dallas Cowboys legend and Hall of Famer Troy Aikman chimed in on the matter, as shared by The Dallas Morning News’ Joey Hayden.

“I just feel there’s probably a lot more than what we’ve heard,” Aikman said. “But it sounds to me, at the end of the day, that people questioned whether or not he could, in fact, be a franchise quarterback. I do believe that if a team, especially at that position, a quarterback, if a team believes that you can be a franchise quarterback, they’re going to take you. I mean, they’re simply going to take you.”

“From what I’ve heard, it just sounds like if Team Shedeur had a chance to do it over again, they’d probably approach [the draft process] a lot differently. It’s not the end of the world. Now, it’s an uphill battle for him. He’s working week-to-week as a fifth-round pick.”

The Cowboys don’t necessarily need a quarterback after trading the New England Patriots for Joe Milton III this offseason. There surely are some teams in the league who could have drafted Sanders, but for whatever reason, decided to stay not draft him. Sanders and Gabriel now join a crowded quarterback room in Cleveland with Deshaun Watson, Joe Flacco and Kenny Pickett.
