Conor Benn believes Ryan Garcia will not hear the final bell when they meet for the WBC welterweight title on September 12. The British contender also confirmed the bout will be the final time he fights at 147 pounds before moving up in weight.
Benn has not fought at the welterweight limit in four years after twice moving up to face Chris Eubank Jr. He admitted making 147 again has been a difficult challenge, but believes the effort will pay off if he leaves Las Vegas with Garcia’s WBC title.
“I don’t care what he’s doing. Like it makes no difference. He can carry on doing what he’s doing,” said Benn to Ring about Ryan. “It don’t concern me at all. All I know is I’m working extremely hard to come out victorious. No doubt I’ll be looking for the stoppage myself. I think I’ll stop him. Yeah, I do.”
Benn also confirmed the Garcia fight will close out his welterweight career. He has not competed at 147 since 2022, making this his first attempt to reach the division’s limit in four years. The weight cut appears to be a major question mark. Benn looked visibly drained before his 150-pound catchweight bout against Regis Prograis last April, making it worth watching how he looks on the scale September 12
“Yeah, it’s hard. It’s brutal. This is my last fight at 147. When I win the world title, I’ll move on,” said Benn. “Yeah, I haven’t made 147 for four years, so it’s challenging. I went up to 183 for the Eubank fights, but we’re getting it done.”
Asked where he sees himself after Garcia, Benn answered, “154, 160, 168.”
Junior middleweight appears to be the natural destination after the Ryan fight. Benn has proven he can carry extra weight, but campaigning full time against established contenders at 160 or 168 would present a much greater challenge. Everything depends on September 12, when he will attempt to capture Garcia’s WBC title before closing the book on his welterweight career.
