Why USG can’t play at home vs Newcastle
Newcastle face Belgain side Union Saint-Gilloise tonight.
But the club, partly owned by Brighton chief Tony Bloom, are playing their home Champions League games away from the Stade Joseph Marien Stadium in Brussels.
Their home ground holds just 9,400 fans and does not meet Uefa requirements.
They are instead playing matches across the city at Anderlecht’s 21,500-seater Lotto Park.
Howe hits back at “idiots” jibe
Eddie Howe has fired back at Bayern Munich chief Karl-Heinz Rummenigge after his criticised the fee they paid to sign Nick Woltemade.
Rummenigge congratulated Stuttgart for “finding an idiot who will pay that much money” after the striker £69million move.
Fellow Bayern chief Max Eberl called the deal “a strategic transfer or an act of desperation”.
Eddie Howe responded to the remarks, saying: “It’s irrelevant, really.
“The market forces dictate transfers fees – not necessarily any one club.
“We’re very pleased to have Nick with us. I think he’s started very strongly in what has been a difficult period for him because he’s been thrust straight into action with no training time of note with us.
“He’s done really well. We’re really pleased to have him with us and the transfer fee is absolutely irrelevant.”
Liverpool’s injury nightmare
A poor performance and 1-0 loss to Galatasaray is not the only thing for Arne Slot to stomach today.
Alisson and Hugo Ekitike were both forced off with injuries yesterday, with the boss providing a worrying update on their fitness.
The goalkeeper is set to miss the Premier League clash with Chelsea on Saturday night and Giorgi Mamardashvili is set to come in between the sticks.
Slot said: “It is never a positive sign when a player has to go off like this.
“When my player is on the floor I nine out of 10 times fear the worst.
“And with the worst I mean that he cannot continue, and that is what happened with Alisson.
“Then normally, he will not be able to play Saturday, that’s 99.9 per cent.
“I have already said 100 per cent, but let’s make it 99.9.”
On Ekitike, Slot added: “He said he couldn’t continue, so we had to take him off, let’s see how he is for the weekend.”
