Everyone wants to be closer to family. 

For the Hughes brothers, they might just be able to play on the same team. 

Canucks’ general manager Jim Rutherford is certainly hoping that happens in Vancouver — not New Jersey.

“The one thing that we will be sure of (is) that we will have enough cap space to offer him the kind of contract that he deserves. That’s the one thing we can prepare for,” Rutherford said of the Canucks’ captain, who’s eligible to sign an extension July 1, 2026, before he can become an unrestricted free agent in 2027.

“It may not boil down to money with him. He said before he wants to play with his brothers. That would be partly out of our control, in our control if we brought his brothers here.”

Quinn’s brothers, Jack and Luke, play for the New Jersey Devils, with Rutherford likely to do whatever it takes to keep Quinn in Vancouver.

However, there’s some things that money just can’t make up for. 

Hughes is due for a massive contract raise from his current $7.85-million cap hit. He won the Norris Trophy last season and is one of the league’s best player. With the cap skyrocketing, he’s expected to make somewhere in the $14-$15 million range on his new deal. 

The Canucks missed the playoffs for the fourth time in five seasons. The Devils are in the Metropolitan Division Semifinals against the Carolina Hurricanes and down 1-0 in the best of seven series.
