While the Lakers have lots of new faces joining the franchise this season, one of the more intriguing players returning is Bronny James.
The only real discussion about him this offseason is whether or not he’d be used as a trade pawn before or after his father’s free agency decision. Once it became clear the Lakers were holding onto him, he drifted into the background.
It’s a spot he’s been comfortable in while with the Lakers. But entering his third year, the expectations will start to rise. Following a couple of seasons of development, the results will need to come this year.
In a recent radio interview, Bronny spoke on ESPN LA’s “Mason & Ireland” about what he’s focused on this summer.
“All across the board I’m trying to get better. I’m playing with Luka and AR still, so I’m going to be off ball. When it’s needed, I need to be able to knock down shots and create for others and I think I’ve been doing a good job at that this summer.”
Bronny’s role with the team will become a bit more streamlined this season. With the offense built around Luka Dončić and Austin Reaves being on the ball, Bronny’s role will be as an off-ball guard.
Focusing on what will come in those moments is the best way to handle his offseason work. He talked a bit more about that when asked about what type of player he sees himself becoming.
“I feel like I can be a secondary ballhandler to Luka and AR and generate whatever offense. Catch-and-shoot, pick-and-roll offense and stuff like that. I just pride myself in being an all-around player and whatever’s needed, I’m up for it.”
This is a make-or-break year for Bronny. The Lakers have a wealth of options at guard, both older and younger than him. With a team option for next season, the clock is ticking for Bronny, who needs to start making an impact in games.
He has the right mindset for what to work on this summer, but, again, that will have to lead to real production this season.
