Anthony Joshua isn’t lowering his expectations as he prepares for his July 25 fight against Kristian Prenga. Rather than focusing on winning another world title, the former unified heavyweight champion says his ultimate goal remains becoming the undisputed heavyweight champion.
“Physical and mental, I’m solid, very solid,” said Joshua to DAZN Boxing. “And if I can improve my spirituality, I’ll definitely get to where I want to get to. And I believe I can become undisputed. I still have got the ambition and hunger. Anything below that, is a champion. So one of the two, I’m definitely going to get.”
Joshua’s next fight comes against Prenga in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, in a fight he is expected to win. Victory would likely move him into a long-discussed showdown with Tyson Fury later this year, one of the biggest fights available in boxing.
Even if Joshua defeats Prenga and Fury, his pursuit of the undisputed championship would still require him to navigate one of boxing’s deepest heavyweight divisions. WBC champion Agit Kabayel, WBO champion Daniel Dubois, the eventual WBA and IBF champions, and unbeaten contender Moses Itauma could all stand between Joshua and the achievement he says is still within reach.
Joshua’s ambition is easy enough to understand. The harder part is turning it into reality. He is no longer chasing the same heavyweight division he once ruled. The titleholders are different, new contenders have emerged, and younger fighters are beginning to take over. Joshua may believe another undisputed reign is still possible, but he’ll have to prove he can beat the best heavyweights of this era before that vision becomes anything more than confidence.
