Alberto Puello intends to turn Dalton Smith’s long-anticipated Sheffield homecoming into the most painful night of his career.
The Dominican challenger travels to England on October 24 to challenge Smith for the WBC light welterweight title at Utilita Arena, live on DAZN. Puello respects the champion’s ability, yet his final promise removed any friendliness from their first meeting.
“There’s very few things I can say about weaknesses. I don’t see many weaknesses in him. But what I will say is that it will be hugely satisfying to come here to his home and to rip the belt away from him. It will be really satisfying for me and a humiliation for him,” said Puello during Wednesday’s kickoff press conference.
A January trip to Brooklyn ended with Smith capturing the title through a knockout of Subriel Matias. The finish surprised Puello, who had lost a majority decision to Matias in July 2025. Abandoning his plan is how the Dominican explains that defeat. He believes allowing Matias to dictate the fight prevented him from securing a clear victory. That experience will guide his approach in Sheffield. Maintaining discipline becomes essential while the crowd attempts to pull him into another fight conducted on his opponent’s terms.
Preparation for this matchup began long before the recent announcement. Smith’s team started studying Puello 18 months ago, back when the Dominican held the championship. A completely different contest from the physical battle with Matias awaits the Sheffield fighter. Smith enjoys facing southpaws and anticipates a high-level boxing match requiring patience and precision.
The lesson from Puello’s Matias defeat will face its greatest test under pressure in Sheffield. Reclaiming the belt would be satisfying enough. Taking it from Smith in his home city would deliver the humiliation he promised.
