Canelo Alvarez says there’s going to be a “huge announcement” from The Ring. He’s not giving any hints about what it is, but fans on social media hope that the undercard will be beefed up for some quality fights for his clash against Terence Crawford this Saturday, September 13.
Fans Hope for Quality Bouts
There are many unhappy fans about the bare-bones undercard, which is mainly comprised of prospects of varying levels of ability. Turki Alalshikh would be doing fans a big solid to move two of the fights from the main card and replace them with some solid fights between top contenders at 135, 140, and 168.
Main Card
- Callum Walsh vs. Fernando Vargas Jr.
- Christian Mbilli vs. Lester Martinez
- Mohammed Alakel vs. John Ornelas
Moving the Walsh-Vargas Jr. and Alakel-Ornelas fights from the main card to the prelims would be a good idea for Turki. The main card should be reserved for high-level talents only, and in my opinion, I don’t view either of those two fights as involving fighters who meet that criteria. Turki would put a big smile on the fans’ faces if he took a broom and swept out those two fights and replaced them.
If he can get some hungry top contenders, like Andy Cruz, Jadier Herrera, Diego Pacheco, or Osleys Iglesias, to step in on late notice for the main card, that would be doing fans a huge favor by giving them some worthwhile fights between fighters determined to win world championship honors.
Preliminary Bouts
- Serhii Bohachuk vs. Brandon Adams
- Ivan Dychko vs. Jermaine Franklin
- Reito Tsutsumi vs. Javier Martinez
- Sultan Almohamed vs. Martin Caraballo
- Steven Nelson vs. Raiko Santana
- Marco Verde vs. Marcos Osorio-Betancourt
“Neither guy is known for punching power, but with Bud’s extra weight on him, his punching power might increase,” said Roy Jones Jr. to All The Smoke.
“The question is, can he take Canelo’s shot?” said host Andre Ward about Crawford.
The Riddle of Bud’s Style
“Can you solve that riddle?” said Jones Jr. about whether Canelo can solve Crawford’s style because he’s never been beaten. “If Canelo loses, they’re going to say he lost to a smaller guy. But this smaller guy is the only guy to be undisputed in three weight classes,” said Jones Jr., mistakenly saying Crawford has won three instead of two undisputed championships.
