Canelo Accepts Mbilli War His Body Cannot Sustain

Canelo Alvarez insisting that he will not run from Christian Mbilli sounds like a textbook case of whistling past the graveyard. He is promising to meet a younger, relentless pressure fighter in the trenches despite no longer possessing the stamina or punch output required to survive that kind of pace for 12 rounds.

Canelo and Mbilli will meet on October 31 in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, with Mbilli’s WBC super middleweight title at stake. The Riyadh Season event will be shown on DAZN PPV, although a specific venue has not yet been announced. The fight was moved from its original September 12 date.

“It was a very good fight. I don’t like when a boxer runs away,” Mbilli told DAZN Boxing when discussing Canelo’s loss to Terence Crawford. “You see my style. I am Mexican style. I love Mexican style, and I don’t like when people run away. I like when a boxer comes to fight.”

“No, I won’t. I don’t need it,” Canelo answered when DAZN commentator Todd Grisham asked if he would run from Mbilli.

The strange part is that Crawford spent much of their fight moving and occasionally staying completely out of range. He never forced Canelo into a high-volume brawl. Canelo still emptied his gas tank after six rounds.

During the first half, Alvarez landed the harder and cleaner punches. He understood what was required, but his body stopped cooperating. Had he maintained that effort through the final six rounds, he may have won. The mind was willing, but the flesh was weak.

That decline was also visible against William Scull, Edgar Berlanga and Jaime Munguia. Different opponents produced the same result: Canelo worked in brief bursts, slowed near the midpoint, and spent longer periods searching for one fight-altering counter rather than constructing combinations.

Mbilli will apply a far more exhausting form of pressure. He does not merely throw combinations. Inside the pocket, he leans his upper body against opponents, controls their posture, and makes them carry his weight. Canelo already carries heavy muscle on a compact 5’8″ body. Wrestling with Mbilli in clinches will drain his legs faster than trading punches at open range.

Resting behind a high guard may not save him. Canelo uses torso rolls and shoulder parries along the ropes, but that shell leaves openings underneath his elbows. Mbilli’s shovel hooks attack the ribs and flanks. Punches absorbed on the arms will also take energy from Canelo, even when they never reach his chin cleanly.

The early danger belongs to Mbilli. Canelo can still land a sharp hook or uppercut while Mbilli charges inside, but what happens if Mbilli absorbs it and immediately starts another combination? Canelo no longer throws enough follow-up punches to keep a fearless, durable pressure fighter away.

The referee may have a major influence. If Canelo is permitted to clinch, spin out, and demand a reset whenever Mbilli closes the distance, he will receive valuable breathing periods. If the official orders them to fight out of every tie-up, Mbilli can turn the later rounds into a draining physical battle.

Canelo says he does not need to run. By the second half, he may discover that moving, holding, and shoving are the only ways to survive the pace he just agreed to accept.
