Oscar Collazo’s rib injury has eliminated the most accomplished fight from the October 10 card. His flyweight title challenge against Ricardo Sandoval is off, leaving Floyd Schofield Jr. and Lucas Bahdi to carry an event that was designed around two substantial attractions.
Schofield (19-0, 13 KOs) and Bahdi (20-0, 15 KOs) will still fight for the WBA lightweight title in the main event. Golden Boy and Most Valuable Promotions have not named a replacement opponent for Sandoval or announced another co-feature.
“Unfortunately, the October 10 world title fight between Oscar Collazo and Ricardo Sandoval will not take place as scheduled after Collazo sustained a rib injury during training. We wish Oscar a speedy recovery and look forward to seeing him back in the ring soon,” Golden Boy stated in its press release.
Collazo (15-0, 12 KOs) described the cancellation as “only a change of date,” but the promotional statement did not confirm that Sandoval will wait for him. That difference is important.
Sandoval (27-2, 18 KOs) owns the WBA and WBC flyweight titles. Holding two belts also leaves him answerable to two sanctioning organizations and two sets of challengers. If either body orders a mandatory defense during Collazo’s recovery, Sandoval may have to accept another opponent rather than preserve Collazo’s opportunity.
The injury also interrupts Collazo’s physical transition from 105 to 112 pounds. Rib damage restricts running, body rotation, sparring, and heavy bag work—the exercises he needs to sharpen his pressure attack and build strength for a higher division. The promoters gave no recovery timetable or precise diagnosis, making it impossible to know when Collazo can resume a complete camp.
Sandoval loses more than a fight date. He has already invested in trainers, sparring partners, and weeks of preparation. Unless Golden Boy keeps him on the October 10 card against a replacement, the unified champion may finish camp without collecting a purse. No details were provided about compensation or his contractual position.
The cancellation also places more pressure on Schofield-Bahdi. Their lightweight fight offers youth, punching power and genuine danger, but Collazo-Sandoval supplied the proven championship quality beneath it. Golden Boy and MVP now need a serious co-feature, not an inexpensive replacement designed merely to fill broadcast time.
Collazo wants the Sandoval fight preserved. Whether the belts, Sandoval’s schedule, and the sanctioning bodies cooperate is another question.
