Tim Bradley’s rebuttal to Shakur Stevenson went far beyond defending his own career. He questioned Shakur’s opposition, his refusal to face Devin Haney at 144 pounds, and his sudden willingness to meet Ryan Garcia at the full welterweight limit.
“You had an opportunity to fight Haney. For whatever reason, you weren’t comfortable with that. But you said that 144 is it, right? And then you put more and more things on top of that after the fact when Haney said what he said. But now you want to have a conversation and say that you want to fight Ryan Garcia. Come on, dog. Stop it,” Bradley said on his channel during his latest show.
Shakur’s objection to Haney focused on the former champion’s size after rehydrating. Ryan presents an even greater physical threat at 147. He hits harder, owns a lethal left hook, and has fully settled into competing as a welterweight.
That makes Shakur’s position easy to understand. He would rather take the physical danger against Ryan for generational money than spend 12 ugly rounds dealing with Haney’s clinching and weight for a smaller purse. The issue was never solely size. It was how much Shakur would be paid to accept it.
Bradley also targeted Shakur’s opposition. Oscar Valdez was declining by the time they met in 2022. Edwin De Los Santos, Shuichiro Yoshino and Artem Harutyunyan never supplied the defining victory Shakur’s talent promised.
The De Los Santos bout damaged Shakur commercially. His refusal to engage produced a contest that casual viewers had little reason to watch again. Ryan brings disorder, knockdowns, and danger. Fans know something dramatic may happen even when Ryan loses. Shakur needs the proper opponent and tactical rhythm to display his skill without draining the entertainment from the contest.
Even Teofimo Lopez was not the most dangerous light welterweight available. Top Rank guided him without putting him against Richardson Hitchins, Gary Antuanne Russell, Keyshawn Davis, or Ernesto Mercado. Any of them might have taken his title before Shakur reached him.mShakur has spent much of the past year trying to turn the Teofimo win into another enormous purse. Pursuing Ryan at 147 allows him to bypass the light welterweight contenders who offer less money and far more difficult technical fights.
Bradley’s most damaging point concerned Zuffa Boxing. Shakur was supposed to become one of its central attractions, yet Zuffa and Turki Alalshikh financed Ryan’s fight with Conor Benn and may support his tune-up.
Ryan remains signed to Golden Boy, but he already functions as Zuffa’s commercial leader. Shakur needs Turki’s cards to reach viewers beyond boxing’s hardcore audience. Ryan brings that audience himself.
The negotiating power belongs entirely to Ryan. He can pursue Gervonta Davis, Devin Haney, Teofimo, or another Benn fight. Shakur needs Ryan to receive the purse and mainstream attention he wants. Ryan does not need Shakur for either one.
