Arnold Barboza Jr. remains highly ranked at welterweight, but rankings mean little when the division’s biggest names have no reason to fight him. At 34, another long break would turn patience into a career waste.
Barboza (33-1, 11 KOs) had enough talent to make his 2025 fight with Teofimo Lopez far more competitive. Instead, he remained too defensive, relied on single potshots, and failed to establish his jab. When that approach stopped working, he never increased his pressure or began throwing combinations. Teofimo was allowed to box at his preferred pace without being forced into sustained exchanges. Barboza waited for openings rather than creating them.
That passive performance now gives Lopez every reason to ignore calls for a rematch at 147 pounds. Moving to welterweight produced a strong response. Barboza comfortably defeated Kenneth Sims Jr. (22-4-1, 8 KOs) at the Honda Center on March 14 by scores of 117-111, 118-110 and 120-108. He collected the vacant WBO Global title and now occupies the No. 3 position behind Brian Norman Jr. and Richardson Hitchins.
“I would like to fight a bigger fight. But if I can’t get a bigger name, then we can go Rocha,” Barboza told the media after beating Sims, as quoted by Bad Left Hook.
Six months later, Barboza still has no date. Gym sessions with UFC lightweight Bobby Green and social media posts keep his name visible without advancing his career. He occupies the worst commercial position in boxing: talented enough to give a star a grueling night, but not popular enough to justify the danger. Ryan wants mega events. Devin Haney has opponents with larger audiences.
Teofimo already beat Barboza and moved on. Golden Boy has an obvious alternative. Alexis Rocha (26-2-1, 16 KOs) fought on the same Anaheim card and handled Joseph Diaz Jr. Matching Rocha with Barboza gives DAZN a credible Southern California main event while establishing Golden Boy’s leading welterweight.
Waiting for a celebrity opponent is no longer sensible. Younger fighters such as Norman are already above Barboza in the WBO rankings. If Barboza wants a title order, he needs victories and activity rather than another year spent calling fighters who have no incentive to answer.
When an unbeaten fighter finally steps onto a massive stage like Times Square and delivers a flat, passive performance, the aura vanishes completely. We saw that with Barboza in his loss to Teofimo last year. Top fighters and their managers now have an easy, bulletproof reason to look the other way: Barboza brings zero fan demand, no explosive highlight reel, and enough fundamental boxing skill to make any favorite look ugly.
At 34, sitting around hoping the phone rings is a waste of time. Big names only hunt out high-risk technicians if there is huge money or an unavoidable sanctioning body mandate attached. Barboza does not drive ticket sales or pay-per-view buys, which leaves him with exactly one viable route forward: staying active, taking real fights like an in-house clash with Alexis Rocha, and forcing an eliminator that hands him mandatory status.
Without a sanctioning body holding a belt hostage, none of the division’s cash cows will ever volunteer to share a ring with him. Every extra month he spends on the shelf waiting for a voluntary shot that is never coming only burns the few prime rounds he has left.
