British Boxing Board Creates New 187-Pound Division

British Boxing Board Creates New 187-Pound Division

The British Boxing Board of Control has approved a 187-pound weight class to bridge the punishing jump between light heavyweight and cruiserweight. The problem is that anyone winning its British title will have nowhere to advance internationally.

Named light cruiserweight, the division begins January 1, 2027. Fighters can compete for Area, English, Celtic and British championships, but none of the four major sanctioning bodies recognizes the category.

Trainer Joe Gallagher pushed the proposal after watching boxers struggle with the 25-pound jump from 175 to 200.

“If you look at the smaller weight classes, they go up by three or four pounds until you get up to featherweight,” Gallagher said, as quoted by talkSPORT.

Adam Booth, Andy Lee, Jamie Moore, Pat Barrett and Robert McCracken also supported the change.

The safety case is stronger than the argument behind the WBC’s 224-pound bridgerweight division. Heavyweight has no upper limit, making bridgerweight feel like an extra championship created without a pressing need. A natural 190-pound fighter faces a harsher choice: drain himself to 175 or meet cruiserweights who may enter the ring near 215 after rehydrating.

Yet the new division leads directly into a domestic cul de sac. Winning a British championship traditionally prepares a fighter for European and world competition. A light cruiserweight champion must eventually squeeze back to 175 or bulk up to 200, defeating the purpose of the new category.

Promoters also have little reason to build headliners at 187. The division cannot produce a recognized world champion, much less a unified or undisputed title fight. Broadcasters already have difficulty explaining boxing’s collection of divisions and secondary belts.

There is also a danger that ordinary light heavyweights will chase easier honors at 187, weakening both domestic fields rather than protecting truly undersized cruiserweights.

Britain can test the idea, but its survival depends on international adoption. Without support from at least one major sanctioning body, light cruiserweight may become a British title with no road beyond it.
