Eddie Hearn is gloating because Zuffa Boxing paid a massive premium to snatch Conor Benn, only to watch their expensive acquisition get dismantled inside two rounds. Ryan Garcia’s right hand exposed Benn’s limits at the elite world level, leaving Zuffa holding the bag on a fighter whose marketability took a direct hit.
Hearn claims the Garcia-Benn event generated an $8 million gate but still lost heavily because of the money invested in the card and Benn.
“The show would have lost a lot of money, but that’s the investment that they’re making,” Hearn told The Stomping Ground. “They’ve absolutely done their conkers on Conor Benn. They never signed Conor Benn to make it work for their business. They signed Conor Benn as a personal vendetta against me. But that’s just amateur hour. One of the biggest mistakes you can ever make in business is to make emotional decisions to try and get one up on somebody else.”
Hearn is looking at Zuffa’s losses through the narrow lens of an old-school boxing promoter who relies on quarterly margins to survive, which completely misses how venture-backed outfits take over an industry.
In traditional boxing, promoters run lean. Every single show has to balance the books, or someone gets hurt financially. Matchroom operates on that grind, relying on ticket sales, local sponsorships, and regional broadcast rights to scrape out a profit margin. Naturally, Hearn looks at Zuffa dropping eight figures in fighter purses to generate an eight-million-dollar gate and assumes it was a financial catastrophe.
Corporate combat sports works under a completely different rulebook. When Endeavor and TKO Group jump into a new space, they play the long game. They operate the exact same playbook Silicon Valley tech firms and early UFC ownership used. You take heavy losses on purpose during the introductory phase to achieve rapid customer acquisition, establish brand authority, and box out legacy players.
Zuffa was never measuring success on whether September 12 turned a net profit at the box office. They bought their way to the center of the sport overnight. They packed out T-Mobile Arena, secured a premier broadcast slot on Paramount Plus, put on massive social media numbers, and proved they can mount a legitimate Vegas blockbuster.
More importantly, it sent a message to the entire boxing locker room. Fighters saw Benn pull an enormous paycheck; they saw first-class production, and they realized Zuffa has the financial muscle to outbid anyone. That type of institutional upheaval cannot be evaluated on a single night ticket stub balance sheet. Hearn might feel vindicated because Benn was stopped in the second round, but treating an intentional market acquisition budget as an amateur mistake shows he fundamentally underestimates the machine he is up against.
