Alexis Rocha Sends Jose Ramirez Career Spiraling

Alexis Rocha defeated former unified light welterweight champion Jose Carlos Ramirez by unanimous decision over 10 rounds Saturday night at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada. The judges scored the welterweight contest 98-91, 98-91 and 97-92.

Those totals made the fight look like a routine beating. It was anything but that. Ramirez (29-4, 18 KOs) applied pressure, landed hard punches, and won enough competitive rounds for several unofficial scorers to have him narrowly in front before the ninth.

Rocha’s southpaw jab, lateral movement, and cleaner combinations gave Ramirez trouble, particularly when the former champion followed rather than cutting off the ring. The 29-year-old stayed composed under pressure and made better use of the available space.

The decisive moment arrived in the ninth when Rocha (27-2-1, 16 KOs) dropped Ramirez. That knockdown produced a 10-8 round and gave Rocha the cushion he needed, but it still does not fully explain two 98-91 cards. A seven-point margin bears little resemblance to the fight that took place.

Ramirez entered the bout needing far more than a respectable performance. He had already lost consecutive decisions to Arnold Barboza Jr. and Devin Haney before leaving the 140-pound division. Moving up to welterweight was supposed to offer him a chance to rebuild without another draining cut.

Instead, the extra weight brought no visible restoration. Ramirez remained game and dangerous, but his pressure was less effective than it had been during his championship years. He followed Rocha around the ring, struggled with the southpaw angles and paid for his defensive mistakes late.

At 34, another rebuilding campaign will be difficult to sell. Ramirez still has enough name recognition to receive television fights, but promoters may now view him as an opponent for younger welterweights rather than a future title challenger. That is a sharp fall for a former Olympian who once looked capable of ruling an entire division.

Rocha gained the most valuable win of his career, even if the scorecards supplied unnecessary controversy. Ramirez leaves with a much harsher reality: three consecutive losses, a failed welterweight debut, and very few credible routes back to championship contention.
