Foster recognized the bait. Rather than promise a stationary slugging match, he argued that Navarrete is accustomed to imposing himself on physically inferior opposition.
- “He’s trying to talk me into sitting there banging with him. That’s not going to happen. I’m going to control the fight, and I’m going to dominate him. If he gets too crazy, I’m going to put him to sleep. He better remember I’m not them little boys he’s been fighting, them little kids. He’s been weight bullying all these people. I’m not that,” Foster said during the DAZN-streamed press conference.
The accusation carries more substance than the usual prefight insult. Navarrete was at his most destructive at 122 pounds, where his height, reach, punch output, and physical strength allowed him to overwhelm smaller opponents. Those edges became less pronounced at featherweight and have continued shrinking at 130.
His dominant stoppage of reigning IBF champion Eduardo “Sugar” Núñez in their February unification was treated as proof that the old Navarrete had returned. Núñez held a world title, but his record remained thin, and his basic slugging style was made for Navarrete. He came directly at him and accepted the type of fight Navarrete wanted. Charly Suarez provided a more revealing test. His timing, movement, and cleaner punching gave Navarrete serious trouble before the bout ended because of a cut. Navarrete initially received a technical decision, but the California State Athletic Commission overturned the result to a no contest in June 2025.
He arguably deserved to lose and should already be settling that controversy in a rematch. The three-belt fight with Foster offers considerably more money and prestige, along with an understandable reason to leave Suarez behind.
Foster presents a harder tactical problem. He uses lateral movement to control distance and counters sharply when opponents sacrifice their balance. Navarrete routinely does exactly that while launching looping punches from unusual angles. That approach still carries danger for Foster. He has encountered trouble when opponents trap him against the ropes and deny him room to reset. Navarrete must attack the body and smother Foster’s space rather than waste punches chasing his head.
The WBC champion also has to make his cleaner work unmistakable. Navarrete’s activity and forward movement can influence judges even when many of his punches miss. Close rounds may become difficult to win if Foster spends long stretches defending without answering.
The crowd should favor Navarrete in San Antonio, but Foster has already defeated Stephen Fulton at Frost Bank Center. The surroundings will be familiar, even if the support is not.
Navarrete wants to turn the contest into a test of toughness and output. Foster intends to make it a test of precision, one in which his opponent’s former size edge will no longer rescue him.
