“I felt a bit too comfortable maybe with the really early knockdown, then followed by another one in the third,” Wardley said during the kick-off press conference. “I thought this is near on a foregone conclusion. I’ve done it once, I’ve done it twice, I can get him out of there.

“I was a victim of my own success in them early stages. I just got trigger-happy, got carried away with trying to launch that right hand. In the moments when I did have him hurt, I don’t actually think I jumped on him enough.”

The mistake was not simply failing to throw enough punches. Wardley stopped disguising the right hand and began loading up from too far away. Dubois steadied himself behind a stiff jab, controlled the distance, and forced him to expend more energy each time he attempted to close the space.

The challenger needs greater variety in London. Hooks to the ribs would give Dubois something else to consider behind his tight guard, while doubling the lead hook may create a cleaner route for Wardley’s power. Hunting for one spectacular shot only makes his attack easier to read.

Pacing will be just as important. An early knockdown does not require an immediate all-out assault, particularly in a fight scheduled for 12 rounds. Wardley must allow his successes to count on the scorecards without emptying his energy reserves in search of a dramatic finish.

The five-month turnaround adds another concern. Wardley absorbed sustained punishment before the 11th-round stoppage and has gone directly into another demanding camp without an interim bout. He dismissed questions about his condition, saying he had “absolutely zero excuses” for the defeat or the rematch.

Dubois carries the psychological advantage. He knows he can withstand Wardley’s heaviest punches, regain command with his jab, and break him down over the later rounds. The harder mental test for Wardley may arrive if he lands cleanly again and the champion refuses to fold.

The first fight established that Wardley can hurt Dubois. On October 17, he must show that early success will sharpen his decisions instead of distorting them.
