Astros shake up leadership, part ways with GM Dana Brown

Dana Brown is out as general manager of the Houston Astros.

Brown – who has held the position for just over 3 ½ years – was coming to the end of his contract at the conclusion of the season, but he and the team announced on Monday, Aug. 24, that they have “mutually agreed to part ways.”

“Over the past four seasons, Dana has helped our organization win two division titles and has led our baseball front office through key scouting, draft and development efforts,” team owner Jim Crane said in a statement. “On behalf of the Astros, I want to thank him for his commitment, energy, and contributions to our organization.”

The team said Crane will oversee baseball operations as assistant GMs Charles Cook, Gavin Dickey and Connor Huff, and senior adviser Jeff Bagwell take over Crane’s duties.

The move comes with the Astros tied for first place in the American League West division, but with a sub-.500 record of 65-66. That’s also despite an MVP-caliber season from designated hitter Yordan Alvarez, who leads the league in all three Triple Crown hitting categories with a .320 average, 36 home runs and 90 RBI.
