Milwaukee Brewers prospect Sawyer Strosnider’s memorable first professional home run with the High-A Wisconsin Timber Rattlers on Wednesday got even better when he saw who caught the dinger.
With the score tied at two against the Lake County Captains in the bottom of the seventh inning, Strosnider crushed a pitch from Logan McGuire over the right-centerfield wall. A lucky fan standing in that area made a perfect catch on the other side of the fence.
The fan? His dad, Scott Strosnider.
“My dad, he can’t sit still, so he loves to run around the stadium,” Strosnider told MLB.com. “I’ll just be looking up after a foul ball or something and see him on every different side of the stadium. I think it was just the right place at the right time.”
Scott Snostrider had an inkling his son was about to do something special. As his son was getting set to lead off the inning, dad moved to that section in right-centerfield and unknowingly became an uninvited guest.
“The people on the party deck were like, ‘You know, this is a private party,'” Scott said. “I was like, ‘Well, my son’s about to hit a home run that I’m going to catch.'”
Dad’s parental intuition was so strong that he was videotaping the at-bat as his son’s home run ball made its way over the wall. Scott smartly dropped his phone when he realized he was about to catch the ball, ensuring a special piece of memorabilia would be added to the family collection.
Sawyer Strosnider had a good day to go along with the Timber Rattlers’ 5-3 win. The TCU product went 2-for-4 with the home run and an RBI double in his seventh pro game after being selected 66th overall by the Brewers in last month’s MLB draft.
Not much else could top this experience.
“We’ve got those little keepsakes,” Scott said. “But you know, when you get to this level playing in a professional field, this home run ball is probably going to be a memory for a long, long time.”
